South African Nut Factory Boosts High Production Capacity with 18 Weighing & Packaging All-in-One Machines in a Compact Workshop

With two decades of experience in the weighing and packaging industry, I have handled numerous overseas orders. Yet the order from this nut factory in Durban, South Africa, stands out as the most "quiet" large order I have ever received — there was no repeated technical docking, no protracted price negotiations, not even a request for a virtual factory tour. After a full year, the client directly sent over a purchase contract for 18 sets of all-in-one machines.

Client Background

The client is a well-established processing factory with over a decade of deep involvement in South Africa’s nut industry. It specializes in the grading and small-package production of macadamia nuts, cashews and pecans, with products covering local chain supermarkets across South Africa and being exported to the EU market. In 2025, the client secured an annual supply contract from a leading local supermarket chain, which doubled its production demand and created an urgent need for 18 additional packaging lines for capacity expansion.

The Client’s Two Core Challenges

1. Limited workshop space, unable to fit more production lines

The reserved expansion area in the client’s existing workshop was limited. Initial calculations based on the traditional split solution of "multihead weigher + vertical packaging machine" showed that only 12 lines could be arranged at most, falling one-third short of the 18-line target. With high rental costs for industrial workshops and long infrastructure construction cycles in South Africa, renting a new facility for expansion was clearly not cost-effective. Space became the primary barrier to capacity growth.

2. High-value nuts leave no room for weighing errors

Nuts are high-unit-price agricultural products. The client’s old equipment used volumetric metering, which caused large weight deviations per pack when dealing with nuts of uneven sizes. This not only led to frequent failures in net content sampling inspections for EU pre-packaged foods, but also resulted in considerable material loss costs over time. The client clearly required that the new equipment must control single-pack weight deviation within an extremely small range, to meet both compliance standards and cost control needs.

Our Solution: 18 Sets of 14-Head Weighing & Packaging All-in-One Machines

Targeting the client’s core demands of "small space, large capacity and high precision", we provided a whole-plant solution with 18 sets of integrated weighing and packaging equipment, which precisely addressed both pain points:

1. Integrated design cuts floor space by over 30%

This all-in-one machine integrates a 14-head combination weighing unit, vertical bag-forming packaging unit and date coding unit on a single frame, sharing one control system and power supply system. It eliminates the installation gaps and connection platforms required between split equipment, reducing the floor space of a single machine by more than 30% compared with the split solution.

Eventually, the 18 lines were arranged in a double-row layout and fit perfectly into the client’s reserved expansion area. Not only was there no need to rent additional workshop space, but room was also reserved for material turnover and equipment maintenance, making the workshop workflow smoother than originally planned.

2. High-precision weighing minimizes material loss

The equipment is equipped with 14 high-precision weighing load cells, paired with an intelligent combination weighing algorithm specially optimized for the uneven size characteristics of nuts. The single-pack weighing accuracy is stably controlled within ±0.5g, fully complying with EU food net content regulations.

Meanwhile, all material-contact parts of the machine are made of food-grade 304 stainless steel, which is oil-resistant and easy to clean, adapting to the oily nature of nuts. The wide-voltage design also adapts to the grid fluctuation conditions in South Africa, supporting stable continuous production under two-shift operations.

Deal Story: A Random Visit on the Independent Website, a Firm Order One Year Later

The team still finds the closing process of this order quite interesting.

The client first contacted us via our brand independent website in mid-2025. At that time, he only left a brief inquiry on the product page of the weighing and packaging all-in-one machine, asking about three core parameters: equipment dimensions, weighing accuracy and packaging speed. After our foreign trade colleague sent over the detailed parameter sheet, there was no further follow-up. Anyone in foreign trade knows that unanswered inquiries are very common, and the team soon forgot about it.

Unexpectedly, 12 full months later, in June 2026, the client directly sent an official purchase email. Attached were complete workshop floor plans and a capacity planning sheet, clearly marking the purchase of 18 sets of 14-head weighing and packaging all-in-one machines, with almost no additional bargaining or special requirements.

Later, we learned from our conversation that the client had not been idle at all during that year. He compared 7 equipment manufacturers from Europe, South Africa and China, repeatedly arranged and calculated the dimensions of each manufacturer’s equipment on the workshop drawings, and calculated floor space costs, precision-related material loss and annual operation and maintenance expenses item by item.

In the final calculation, only our all-in-one machines could fit 18 lines in the existing workshop while meeting all accuracy and capacity standards. He also specifically asked local South African food factories that use our equipment about our reputation, and only placed the order directly after confirming that the equipment stability and after-sales response were reliable.

Project Results

After the installation and commissioning of the 18 production lines at the client’s factory, they passed the trial production acceptance in one go:

Space target met: The actual floor space is nearly 280 square meters less than the split solution, perfectly adapting to the existing workshop, and the extra space was used to add a finished product temporary storage area.

Accuracy compliance achieved: 1200 packs of products were randomly inspected continuously, and all net content deviations were controlled within the standard range, successfully passing the EU export commodity inspection.

Capacity target reached: The 18 lines fully meet the supply demand of the supermarket order.

After two decades in the packaging equipment industry, I have always believed that the manufacturing and equipment business ultimately relies on solid technical strength. Clients thousands of kilometers away cannot visit the factory at any time. But if you deliver solid parameters and thoroughly solve the clients’ most troublesome problems, even if they stay silent for a whole year, you will still be their first choice when it comes to making a decision. These 18 machines crossed the Indian Ocean and landed in South Africa, bringing us not just an order, but a cross-ocean reputation.
